Sugar Cones are the unhinged side of Killing Field Records, and when the jokes stop, the most exposed.
The Lincoln, Nebraska duo of Populus and Bagheadddd, Pop and Bag, build songs around clash and contradiction: harsh lyrics over playful ideas, dead-serious lines tucked between deranged jokes, hooks that feel wrong but stick anyway. One verse has the Green Missile flying down the interstate; the next is a panic attack in the bathroom. That tension is the point: "Sweet and Sour" as a full operating system.
They draw from Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, Billy Woods, Lucki, and the chaotic spirit of Insane Clown Posse. The bars themselves name-check everyone from Tommy Wright III and MF DOOM to Mastodon and Steely Dan. Instead of copying any one lane, Sugar Cones mash that DNA into their own blend of violent humor, anxious storytelling, and underground grit.
The duo announced themselves with their debut album Swinging (2023), a ten-track blast of chaos that opens with Jinx voicing a doomed crustacean on "Boiled Lobster" and ends with the blunt finality of "Guillotine." The record pulls in the broader KFR family, featuring appearances from Jinx, enemyX, theyAreGhost, Captain VIII, and label head Cryptic-X. Swinging was released during Four Winds Music Festival in Omaha, where Sugar Cones and the rest of Killing Field Records played to a nearly sold-out crowd at Reverb Lounge. It's also available in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music.
In 2025 came Swimming, the sound of the fun wearing off. Where Swinging was reckless, Swimming is submerged: pills, isolation, missing when home was home, and the outsider anger of "America's Rejects" sharpened into open political fire, all over suffocating, bass-drenched production. The jokes are still there, but now they sound like coping. Features from Eliphas, Cryptic-X, and the late Jinx pull the record deeper into the Killing Field Records universe, tying their story into the label's larger legacy.
Beyond the studio, Sugar Cones have become a fixture in Nebraska's underground, performing across the state and building close ties with local artists, fans, and venues. What started as two friends experimenting with sound has grown into a project that carries family, community, and a very specific brand of chaos at its core.
